Friends of Flora - Community helping Conservation

Community

FOF is an example of what can be achieved when a group of dedicated people get together. However, we cannot become complacent. It is an ongoing project and will have to remain in place, along with current DOC programs, until such times as better ways are found of eradicating introduced predators.

From a small group of very enthusiastic volunteers, Friends of Flora has grown to become a true community project.

Between DOC and FOF, we now have a trapping program covering almost 5,000 hectares. Our hope is that we can keep predator numbers (stoat, rat & possum) low enough that birds such as Whio, Kaka, Robin etc. can breed in safety.

Students from the Motueka High School conservation group have put in a great deal of their own time to make the rat trap tunnels for FOF. Many of these students are also regulars on monitoring weekends, and help us with the checking of rat traps. They are also becoming adept with bird monitoring and using the monitoring sheets.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer for Friends of Flora (a great way to make new friends), or if you would like to give a donation, please contact our secretary.
