Friends of Flora - Community helping Conservation |
Mission![]() The objective of the society is to implement, in partnership with the Department of Conservation, a conservation strategy to bring about the protection and/or return of endangered and threatened flora and fauna to the Flora Stream catchment area in Kahurangi National Park. This will enhance the experience for all visitors to this popular area, resulting in wider community appreciation and use of the Park. Introduced predators such as stoats and rats are destroying our native fauna. Without human intervention, our native bird population will continue to decline, and more wil be beome extinct. This is certainly true in the Flora. Friends of Flora (FoF) is a community group founded in January 2001. We believe our native fauna must be preserved for future generations, and it is our responsibility to make it happen here, now. "Friends of Flora and the Department of Conservation maintain a collaborative management partnership, sharing resources and expertise for the ongoing successful management of Flora Stream. The Department welcomes and supports the vision and initiative of the Friends of Flora group, and is committed to working with this group to achieve their principal aim of returning the Flora Stream to a place of birdsong." Martin Rodd, Motueka Area Manager, Department of Conservation

What's New?
The call of the kiwi can again be heard in Kahurangi National Park’s Flora Stream area. In “a dream come true”, 12 great spotted kiwi/roroa were released into the Flora area on Wednesday 5 May, returning the species to this part of the park. With support from the Department of Conservation, the group moved the kiwi, seven males and five females, from Kahurangi National Park’s Clark River area and released them into burrows in their new home.
